Easy DIY Photo Standout Mount Prints

November 9, 2015

Christmas is coming and who doesn’t want to save money on gifts. This project is a great gift idea for parents, grandparents, newlyweds, and anyone else that likes to decorate with pictures. Everyone loves photo standout mount prints, but at $50-$100 a pop at the printer a whole wall can get a little pricey. We have a super easy and ridiculously cheap way to make your own….and they look just as good as the photo printing shop.

What you need:

  1. A standout mount block: We chose ours from Hobby Lobby’s wall decor section. They have words and drawings on them that are super cute, but we just put the pictures right on top of the writing. We picked the ones with white edges, but they have black, different colors and even glittery ones too. These are ready made works of art that Hobby Lobby sells.  We bought 2 of them (10 x 10 and 9 X 12 inches). Regular priced they were $9.99 and $11.99, but we went during a 50% off wall decor sale. So we paid a total of $11.00 for both!
  2. Pictures: We had ours printed at Mpix.com. The 10×10 and 9×12 size printed on metallic paper were $5.69 each. We love the quality and fast shipping at Mpix, but you can print yours anywhere
  3. Tools: spray adhesive, ruller & rotary cutter. We already own these items (who doesn’t?!?!?) so the tools are not included in our total cost. The standout mount boards were slightly smaller than our printed pictures so we had to trim a little off the edges of the prints and the clear ruler with rotary cutter worked best for this.

Once you have your tools all you need to do is trim the pictures to fit the blocks and then spray a light layer of adhesive to the blocks then lay the pictures on the blocks and press them down. Our spray glue was supper sticky so it was a little hard to get it off the first time we put the picture on a little crooked, but it held very well and did not cause any wrinkling in the picture.  The finished product looked just as good as the ones we have ordered from the printer.

Project total cost $22.38

Total cost if purchased from the printer (Mpix) $100

That’s a savings of $77.62!

For that price we may just do the whole house in standout mounts. Spoiler alert, everyone knows what they are getting for Christmas now 🙂

Hi! I'm Sarah, mom of four, living the dream in the MidCoast. This is my journey of moming, crafting, traveling, shoping, saving, living, loving, learning, etc. I'm really good at run-on sentences. I don't have time to proofread and I assume if you are here you are a busy mom as well, so you don't care. Thanks for stopping by!
