Loved our family adventure in Tulum, Mexico! We stopped calling them vacations after the first one, because fyi, there is no such thing as a vacation when you have kids. Everything is an ADVENTURE!
Tulum, Mexico is about 1.5-2 hours south of Cancun. It is the perfect spot for families. We rented a house on Soliman Bay which has calm almost lagoon type water. It’s also right on a reef so we could snorkel right outside the back door and see some really cool stuff.
With a nonstop 3.5 hour flight from Kansas City plus staying in the same time zone, this is a really easy trip with kids. We have a van pick us up at the airport, make a stop at Walmart (more on that later) to get food/supplies for the week, then off to the house.
We always rent a house if possible. A hotel room with a family of 6 is torture (3 day layover flight delay in Houston on the way back from Costa Rica), not cool. We are not super picky about accommodations, but it’s impossible to put a baby down for a nap in the same room as 3 other kids that are not napping.
Ahhh, shopping in Mexico, not fun. You know how there are “subtitles” in Spanish on pretty much every product here in the US? This is NOT reversed in Mexico. There is NO English on any product in Mexico (at least any of the stores I have been to). I don’t read or speak Spanish so every time we go to Mexico I have the same grocery shopping issues. So if you aren’t staying at a big resort that caters to Americans, allow for extra shopping time and don’t expect to find multiple options for the same product. IE: there is ONE of each thing….one brand of diapers, one kind of milk, one type of coffee, etc. No choices so if there is something you MUST have, bring it from home.
I highly recommend the house we stayed at called Margarita Villa on Soliman Bay
